The Member of Parliament for Ketu-North, Edem Agbana, has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not shield any member who acts in direct contravention of the values of the party.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Monday, February 9, the MP expressed deep disappointment over the alleged voter inducement during the NDC’s Ayawaso Primaries held on Saturday, February 7, 2026.
Following the passing of Alhaji Nasir Toure Mahama, the Ayawaso East Primary was held by the NDC to select a candidate for the vacant seat. Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Ahmed Baba Jamal, together with four other contenders, including the spouse of the late MP, Hajia Amina Adam, participated in the polls.
The election caught national attention after it was alleged that some candidates distributed items including motorbikes, television sets, butas (ablution kettles or water dippers), boiled egg with pepper (Kosua ne meko), sanitary pads, and cash to the delegates.
The NDC’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, shortly after videos surfaced online, released a statement strongly condemning the act, especially as the gifts were meant to induce the voters.
Excerpts of the NDC’s statement read, “The party vehemently condemns these actions in no uncertain terms as they represent an affront to the values and principles of the party.”
Reacting to the Ayawaso primary, Edem Agbana said, “The issue of monetisation and vote-buying must be of concern to each and every one of us as citizens.”
According to the lawmaker, vote buying, which has become part of Ghana’s political discourse, undermines the credibility of the democracy Ghana seeks to build, underscoring the need to put a stop to it.
“I have seen a genuine attempt by the MDC and the government of the day to bring a stop to this culture that we are all not happy about,” Edem Agbana said, while praising the NDC and the government for strongly condemning the act, recalling Baba Jamal and launching a probe into the alleged voter inducement.
“We saw a very open display of opulence on Saturday; we saw how people took television sets, etc. I think that what happened on Saturday was alien to the values of the NDC. This is not the NDC that some of us grew up to love and to join,” Edem said.Monetisation Is Alien to the NDC; Party Will Not Shield Any Member-Edem Agbana Speaks The Member of Parliament for Ketu-North, Edem Agbana, has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not shield any member who acts in direct contravention of the values of the party.
