The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr., has urged the leadership of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to assure Ghanaians of their revised strategies of transforming the economy better than what the current Mahama government is doing, rather than pursuing just the unity of the party.
The erstwhile Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government was faced with a myriad of economic challenges, which caused the party’s victory in the December 2024 elections.
Key among the challenges faced were:
High Public Debt: Rising national debt increased pressure on the government’s spending and repayments.
Inflation and cost of living- Ghanaians experienced an exponential increase in the prices of goods and services.
Currency Depreciation: The Ghana cedi lost its value against its major trading currencies, greatly affecting imports and trade. These and many more were the challenges that confronted the NPP administration when they were in office.
However, the NPP, after electing its flagbearer on January 31, 2026, has been embarking on a unity tour, bringing together all aggrieved members to have a united front as the party prepares to reclaim power in 2028.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, the celebrated journalist and author noted that the party’s quest to unite its members is highly commendable, but added that Ghanaians ought to be assured that what they were subjected to during the NPP administration would not happen again.
“Unity in itself is not bad; it is very much needed. In fact, every political party thrives on unity. But unity alone does not solve everything. What is needed to be done by the NPP is toahead of the 20289 elections is to assure Ghanaians that whatever happened in the economy during their tenure as government would never happen again.
“They assure Ghanaians that if voted for, they will work to transform the economy, better than what the Mahama administration is doing if voted into power in 2028”, Mr. Pratt said.
