Former Finance Minister in the tail end of the erstwhile administration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, claims that the government’s 24-hour economy initiative remains in shambles due to a lack of funding and poor implementation.

The NPP Member of Parliament for Karaga, in an official Facebook post on Wednesday, May 20, argued that the failure to operationalise the secretariat raises serious concerns about the government’s commitment to the flagship policy.

“The 24 hour economy remains a slogan. I have observed a pattern where government is forcing public agencies to operate 24Hrs without increasing staff. A public sector approach to this policy is fundamentally flawed.

If anyone was expecting that the government would create jobs through the public sector approach, you must be reviewing your expectations because the government cannot fund it. The wage bill is 30% of the Budget (33% in 2025). Doubling the wage bill will bankrupt the country. Even the most reckless government cannot do this”, he posted.

He maintained that the initiative was introduced with significant public attention but has so far failed to deliver tangible results.

He further described the policy as unsustainable under the current implementation approach, insisting that the absence of funding and incentives for businesses undermines its prospects of success.

He alleged that the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat is in coma as government has not been releasing funds from the GHS110 million allocated to it this year.

“The policy is dead on arrival. It is a scam!”, Dr, Amin Adam said.
