Five people, including a driver and his mate, sustained gunshot injuries after armed robbers attacked a VIP Jeoun coach on the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
The attack occurred at about 11:00 p.m. on July 30 along the stretch between Apedwa Junction, Nkronso, Akooko and Akyem Asafo, where the robbers reportedly used a vehicle to block the road before launching their attack.
In a statement issued on Friday, July 31, VIP Jeoun said three commercial buses were caught in the blockade as the armed men targeted motorists travelling along the highway.
The company said its coach, which was travelling from Accra to Sunyani, came under heavy gunfire. The driver, his mate and three passengers sustained gunshot injuries.
According to VIP Jeoun, the injured victims were rushed to hospital for treatment, with the driver later transferred to the 37 Military Hospital for specialised care.
The company said police officers from the Suhum Divisional Police Command responded swiftly, engaged the robbers in a gun battle, repelled the attack, cleared the obstruction and reopened the highway to traffic.
VIP Jeoun also disclosed that another of its coaches came under attack about two hours later, at around 1:00 a.m., at Potrikrom on the Kumasi-Sunyani Highway.
It said armed robbers opened fire on the second coach, damaging its windscreen. However, an armed escort on board returned fire, forcing the attackers to flee before they could harm passengers or seize the vehicle.
A police patrol team later arrived at the scene, and no injuries were reported in the second incident.
VIP Jeoun reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of its passengers and crew, saying it remains dedicated to providing safe and reliable transport services despite the attacks.
