The Wassa Fiase Traditional Council has unanimously called on the government not to renew Gold Fields’ mining lease at Tarkwa.
At a Traditional Council meeting, the chiefs collectively argued that despite serving as a mining hub for decades, the area has seen little meaningful development.
They insist that it is time for the lease to be handed over to a local person who can better serve the interests of the community.
The Paramount Queen Mother of Wassa Fiase Traditional Council, Nana Abena Kunadjoa II, explained that the decision is not born out of hatred, but out of a desire for development.
According to her, when you compare the huge revenue generated from gold proceeds to what has been given back to the nation and the community, it is clear that a local person deserves the opportunity now.
Supporting the motion, the Chief of Mahamo, Nana Kobina Gyan II, stressed that the Council’s stance is not driven by hatred or external influence.
He said years of cheating and unfulfilled promises are what have pushed the chiefs to come together to press the government, adding that the black man is capable of managing his own affairs.
Some divisional chiefs also took turns on the floor of the house to share their frustrations and to back the call for the lease to be given to a local person.
