The minority leader and member of Parliament for Effutu, Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on all members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rally behind the flagbearer-elect, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as the party prepares to reclaim power in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking at the Effutu NPP Stakeholder Engagement on Sunday, February 1, 2026, Alexander Afenyo-Markin underscored the need for party members to render their utmost support for Dr. Bawumia, citing his competence, innovative ideas, and enviable leadership skills.

In his address to elated members in Effutu, the minority leader said, “As a constituency, let us celebrate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, our re-elected flagbearer, our leader for the 2028 elections, and indeed the next President of the Republic of Ghana.”

According to the Effutu lawmaker, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s victory is a victory for the NPP tradition.

“His victory is just not his. It is a victory for the NPP tradition—a tradition built on liberty, progress, competence, and character.”

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia faced a fierce contest in the just-concluded Presidential Primaries, where he polled 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast, beating his main contenders, Kennedy Ohene Agyepong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei-Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.

“Throughout the campaign, he stood tall, gracious in adversity, and humble in victory. He exemplified what modern leadership should look like-intelligent, innovative, and anchored in integrity”, Afenyo-Markin said while praising Dr. Bawumia for his resilience in the face of the numerous criticisms and attacks in the build-up to the Presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026.

“He embodies a new generation that understands leadership, one that understands the technology market and our place in an evolving Africa”, Afenyo-Markin added.

“When our critics doubted Dr. Bawumia, he showed that political leadership can be both cerebral and compassionate,” he noted.

Praising the political philosophy of the NPP, Afenyo-Markin said, “Ours is a party that does not fear democracy. We live it, we thrive on ideas, debates, and competitions because we know that in the end, we are bound by something deeper than personal ambitions.”

He cautioned against the development of cold feet among party members, highlighting the need to work tirelessly to help Dr. Bawumia reclaim power from the ruling National Democratic Congress.

“If Dr. Bawumia fails, it is we who have failed him. Let us work for him, work for the party, and work for our country”, Osahen Afenyo-Markin said.
