A Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criticised individuals who have strongly supported President Mahama’s continued use of a private jet belonging to his brother, Ibrahim Mahama.
President Mahama’s use of Ibrahim Mahama’s private jet has sparked so much debate.
Some argue that the arrangement raises ethical concerns and breeds potential conflicts of interest, while others see it as a cost-effective measure. Government officials, including the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, have attributed the use of private jets to the high demand for President Mahama’s presence at international events, with some states offering their aircraft for his travel.
However, posting on his official Facebook page, Kwasi Kwarteng, Esq., argued that if President Mahama’s use of his brother’s private jet is to save cost, then perhaps the Jubilee House and its related operations should be run from the offices of Ibrahim Mahama’s Engineers and Planners’ office.
“Perhaps the President should vacate the Jubilee House and operate from his brother’s Engineers and Planners office. After all, why maintain state infrastructure when family property exists?”, Kwasi Kwarteng said.
“Better still, consider disbanding the presidential security detail and replace it with whatever private guards Ibrahim Mahama has. That will save the state some money. Isn’t it? he argued.
And while we’re at it, maybe the President should forgo his salary and simply draw allowances from his rich brother, efficiency, right?
Meanwhile, Ghana is set to acquire a dedicated presidential aircraft by November 2026, amid public debate over the use of Ibrahim Mahama’s private jet by the president.
The executive secretary to the president, Dr. Callistus Mahama, explained that the current state of the presidential aircraft is aging and faces constant technical constraints, making long-range diplomatic missions very challenging.
