The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has postponed plans to amend its constitution until its next national conference, citing time constraints as the party prepares to elect new national executives.
The Acting National Chairman of the NPP, Joseph Danquah Smith, announced the decision on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the party’s National Delegates Conference.
He explained that the limited time available would make it difficult for delegates to consider the proposed amendments while also conducting the election of new national executives.
Mr Butey said the constitutional amendments would therefore be deferred to a subsequent conference to allow adequate time for delegates to consider the proposals.
The proposed amendments are expected to be fewer than 20 and will include proposals that were not effected during the party’s last constitutional amendment conference in Accra in January 2026.
They will also cover new proposals which, following further consideration, the party believes require another review before being presented to delegates for approval.
One of the key proposals relates to who should be designated as the leader of the party. At its January 31 conference, the NPP introduced a clause stating that the National Chairman shall be the leader of the party at all material times.
Mr Butey said the party would return to the proposed amendments at its next conference, while the current gathering focuses on the election of its new national executives.
