The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has proceeded with its planned constitutional amendments despite an earlier call by Acting National Chairman Joseph Danquah Smith that the exercise be deferred to the party’s next national conference.
The amendments are being considered at the party’s National Delegates Conference on Saturday, October 3, 2026, alongside the election of new national executives.
Mr Smith had earlier proposed postponing the exercise, citing time constraints and concerns that delegates would not have enough time to properly consider the proposed changes while also participating in the executive elections.
However, the party has gone ahead with the constitutional review.
The proposed amendments are expected to be fewer than 20 and include proposals that were not adopted at the NPP’s last constitutional amendment conference in Accra in January 2026.
They also cover new proposals which the party believes require further consideration before being formally adopted.
One of the key issues concerns who should be designated as the leader of the party.
At its January 31 conference, the NPP introduced a clause stating that the National Chairman shall be the leader of the party at all material times.
The latest move means delegates will now consider the proposed amendments despite the earlier call for the exercise to be deferred to a subsequent conference.
